Tony Finau played basketball earlier and received college scholarship offers. However, he decided not to pursue a basketball career and focused on golf. After high school graduation, he turned professional at 17 years of age. Finau competed on many mini-tours such as the National Pro Tour, the NGA Hooters Tour, and the Gateway Tour.

In 2013, he competed on the PGA Tour Canada and made 7 cuts in 8 starts. That same year, he competed at the Web.Com Tour Qualifying school and earned his Web.com card for 2014. Finau got his first professional win at the Stonebrae Classic in August 2014. Subsequently, he earned his PGA Tour card for the 2015 season after finishing 12th in the Web.com Tour Finals.

Finau claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Puerto Rico Open in March 2016. He won the golf event against Steve Marino in a sudden-death playoff.
