Early Life

Skilla Baby was born in October 1998 in Detroit, Michigan. He used to do a lot of mischief things and was a troubled kid. Earlier, he stayed with his mom, but after she moved to Toledo he decided to stay with his father in Detroit. Skilla became more disciplined staying with his dad who was much older than him.

Skilla’s dad was 52 when he was born. His dad used to make him write an essay on Thurgood Marshall. He used to obey his father and had written 31-page essays. While growing up around his father, he began listening to songs by Anita Baker and Luther Vandross.

Skilla changed a few high schools due to behavioral issues. In the end, he attended Oak Park High School. Earlier, he was more interested in basketball. Skilla came with one of his first songs, Crazy in 2016. The song helped him get some respect from his classmates. After that, he continued to write and drop music. As he was not getting any basketball scholarship offers, he didn’t want to attend college. At that time, he shifted his focus to his music career.

Skilla did multiple jobs during his struggling days. He worked at Red Lobster, Walmer, Bucharest Grill, and McDonald’s. While he was working at Captain Jay’s Fish & Chicken, he used to walk 2 miles a day to the music studio to pursue his music dream.

Then, he began making up to the showcase put on DJBJ at Hot 107.5. However, he had to pay $150 to take part in the showcase. At the end of 2017, he was noticed by Detroit rapper, Sada Baby. He made him quit his job and started taking him everywhere to all the shows. Skilla eventually dropped his debut project, Push That Shit Out Skilla in 2019.

Skilla had included socially conscious lyrics about racism and street life in his first song, Trevon. In 2021, his life started getting better, and moved back with his mom. Then, he dropped three music projects, Crak Music, Carmelo Bryant, and Standing on Business. All three projects were well-received by the audiences. He also started getting known as one of the most talented young emcees in Detroit.

In March 2022, he dropped his new song Tay B Style after getting out of jail. His comeback song became his hottest song to date. That same year in July, he was shot. Fortunately, he survived and didn’t suffer any major physical damage. But the incident helped him to gain unexpected popularity.

Skilla then chose to sign a deal with Geffen Records despite receiving a dozen record label offers from known music companies such as United Matters, Columbia, Def Jam, and Atlantic. In December 2022, he released his first song under Geffen. The track was titled, We Eat The Most EP. The lead song from the album, Man Down, and another song, Icky Vicky Vibes became very popular. After figuring out that Ionia County consists of a 91% white population, he decided to take a 30-day sentence rather than risk a lengthy jail sentence. He eventually reported to prison on January 28, 2022, and was released from prison in April 2022.
