Early Life

Shane Lowry was born in April 1987 in Clara, County Offaly. He was raised by his parents, Bridget and Brendan Lowry along with two siblings, Alan and Flanagan. His father played football for the local club, Ferbane, and had made numerous records playing for the Offaly County Team.

For his higher studies, Shane received a scholarship in Sport and Recreation to study at the Athlone Institute of Technology. Lowry started his amateur golf career playing at Esker Hills Club.

In 2007, he became the Irish Amateur Close Champion by defeating Niall Turner in the final. Then, he was included in the Irish team and played from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Lowry was able to show his best form in the European Amateur Team Championship and helped his team lift the title in two consecutive years, 2007 and 2008.

As an amateur, he appeared at The Irish Open in May 2009. Surprisingly, he defeated Robert Rock in a sudden-death playoff and came out as the winner of the event. With the victory, he became the third amateur golfer to secure victory on the European Tour. Shane subsequently moved to 168 rank on the Official World Golf Ranking.

Shane turned professional after winning the Irish Open. He appeared in his maiden professional game at the European Open on May 28. However, he could not perform as expected and missed the first 3 cuts. His best result came at the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament where he finished third. Then, he appeared in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship where he finished fourth.

Shane secured his place for the first time in the major championship at the Open Championship in June 2010. Then, he played at St Andrews where he finished in 37th place. He registered his first professional victory at the Portugal Masters. Shane got his maiden professional win over Englishman Ross Fisher by making a bogey on the final hole.

With the victory at the Portugal Masters, he moved back into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking. In May 2014, he appeared at the BMW PGA Championship where he finished in second place. Following that, he competed at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August 2015. He eventually won the event over Bubba Watson.

Then, he earned his PTA Tour card for the 2015-16 season. In 2016, he appeared at the 2016 U. S. Open. He had the best round at the event with the shot 65 (-5). Shane performed well at the event and finished in second place. After that, he could not get any win on the European Tour for two years.

In 2019, he competed at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and secured the title by defeating Richard Stone. After that, he played at the 2019 Open Championship where he had successive starting rounds of 67. He eventually won the event by 6 shots over Tommy Fleetwood.

Lowry continued his good form in 2022 and finished in second place at The Honda Classic. Then, he appeared at the BMW PGA Championship and won the event shooting 65 in the final round. In September 2023, he was included on the European team to compete at the 2023 Ryder Cup. He went 1-1-1 in his Sunday Singles, and subsequently, the European team also secured victory over the U. S. Team. At the start of 2024, Lowry could not compete at the 2024 Genesis Invitational after failing to qualify for the event.

Personal Life

Shane Lowry married his wife, Wendy in 2016 in New York. The pair met first time in 2012 on a random night out. Shane proposes to Wendy after two years on a beach in Dubai. The Irish golfer shared that they had a small ceremony after their guest list started spiraling.

Together, the couple had two daughters named Ivy and Iris. They currently reside in Clara, County Offaly. On February 14, 2022, Wendy and Shane, both took to Instagram to share the special moments. On the special occasion of Valentine’s Day, Wendy gifted Shane a gigantic balloon. Lowry re-shared the post on Facebook with the caption, I’m a lucky man.
