Early Life

Rashida Tlaib was born in July 1976 in Detroit, Michigan. Her parents were working-class Palestinian immigrants. Being the eldest of 14 children of her parents, she had the responsibility to raise her siblings when her parents were working. Her father used to work in a Ford Motor Company plant.

Rashida was encouraged by Tobocman to run for his seat in 2008. Surprisingly, she came out victorious in the eight-way Democratic primary election, receiving 44% of the vote. Along with that, she also won the general election receiving more than 90% of the vote.

Tlaib ran for reelection to the Michigan House seat in the 6th district. She then won the reelection and ran in the Democratic primary election against Maureen Stapleton. Tlaib defeated Stapleton with a vote margin of 52% to 45%. In 2014, she faced incumbent Senator, Virgil Smith Jr. for the Michigan Senate. She became victorious in the Democratic primary with a vote margin of 50% to 42%.

After winning the 2014 Democratic primary, she became the first female Muslim member of the Michigan State Legislature. Along with that, she also became the second Muslim woman to represent in the state legislature nationwide.

Rashida announced her candidacy in Michigan’s 13th congressional district for the U. S. House of Representatives 2018. She finished second in the Democratic primary special election receiving 37.7% of the votes. After that, she defeated five candidates in the Democratic primary general election.

In 2018, she became the first woman of Palestinian descent to be elected to Congress. Jones challenged Tlaib in the 2020 Democratic primary, where she spent more than $2,000,000 in campaign funds. Eventually, she won the primary election over Jones with 66% to 34%. In 2022, she ran for the relection in Michigan’s 12th congressional district winning 64% of the vote.

On Friday, November 3, 2023, Rashida accused President Joe Biden of supporting a Palestinian genocide by releasing a video. In the video, she warned President Biden to be prepared to face the consequences of reelection next year after his unexpected response to the Israel-Hamas war.

Tlaib has been criticizing Biden’s embrace of Israel since Hamas’s attack on October 7. After the incident, she said that Biden’s actions helped and allowed the deaths of Palestinian civilians. Since Hammas’ attack on October 7, President Biden has been facing enormous pressure in his party as he has been standing in support of Israel.
