Early Life

Jerod Mayo Sr. was born in February 1986 in Hampton, Virginia. He was born to Denise Mayo-Hinds and Wilson Hinds. Mayo grew up with three brothers. One of his younger brothers, Deron played as a linebacker for the professional Canadian football team, Calgary Stampeders. Regarding his education, he studied at Kecoughtan High School. Later, he attended the University of Tennessee.

Jerod Mayo played as a running back and a linebacker for his high school team. He recorded 110 tackles as a senior and picked up 1,245 rushing yards as a running back. Then, he recorded 68 tackles as a junior. In 2004, he began playing for the Tennessee Volunteers Football team.

In the 2004 season, he played as a weak-side outside linebacker and finished with 13 tackles. Then, in 2006, he started the lineup as a redshirt sophomore. Overall, his performance was amazing, and recorded 83 tackles finishing third on the team. After moving into the junior season, he became a middle linebacker and appeared in all 14 games.

In 2007, Mayo recorded 140 tackles and served as the defensive squad’s co-captain. After being considered one of the best linebackers, he was selected by the New England Patriots in the 2008 NFL Draft. Mayo was signed for a five-year contract by the Patriots in July 2008. That same year, he was named the Defensive Rookie of the Month. In November 2008, he appeared in a game against the New York Jets.

In the 2009 season, he suffered a knee injury in a game against the Buffalo Bills. The injury kept him out of the field for six to eight weeks. In Week Five, he made a comeback against the Denver Broncos. Mayo became a defensive captain in 2010 and recorded 16 tackles against the Miami Dolphins. Then, he continued his good form and recorded 15 tackles in Week 11 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Mayo again suffered an injury in the 2011 season and missed 3 games. Despite the injury, he led the Patriots to the Super Bowl XLVI. In the 2012 season, he became a defensive co-captain for the fourth straight year.

In the 2014 season, he suffered a torn patellar tendon against the Buffalo Bills. Due to injury, he was placed on the injured reserve list. Even though he was on the team, the Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks by a close margin, 28-24, and won Super Bowl XLIX. Mayo retired from the NFL in February 2016. He announced retirement through an Instagram post on February 16, 2016, and thanked the Patriots for the amazing 8 years.

Mayo started a new journey as inside linebackers coach for the New England Patriots in March 2019. The Patriots hired Mayo as the 15th head coach on January 12, 2014. Following his appointment, he became the youngest coach in the NFL. The former head coach, Bill Belichick announced on Thursday that he would be leaving the team after 24 seasons.

Mayo shared his excitement about being the new head coach in early January. He said he feels prepared and ready to take over the new role. He also shared that building good relationships with players has been a foundational part of his coaching. Mayo believes once he builds a relationship with a guy then he can be tough on the players.

Jerod Mayo is married to Chantel Rostant with whom he shares four kids. He has 3 daughters, Chya, Chylo, and Chyanne, and a son, Jerod Jr. Chyanne is his youngest kid, while, Chya is the eldest. His son, Jerod Jr was born a year after his eldest daughter, who was born in 2010. As of now, Mayo and his family live in North Attleboro, Massachusetts.
