Early Life
Jelly Roll was born in December 1984 in Antioch, Tennessee. He was born to Horace “Buddy” DeFord, who used to work as a part-time bookie and had a wholesale meat business. Roll grew up with three older half-siblings, sister, Shelby, and two brothers, Scott and Roger.
Roll’s mom struggled with mental health issues and drug addiction. His mom gave him his now, stage name as he used to be chubby as a kid. Roll credits his mom who made him fall in love with music. His parents separated when he was around 13. Roll started selling drugs as he had to take care of his mom. He earned his GED when he was in prison. Roll lost his father due to cancer in March 2019.

Jelly Roll was around 9 or 10 when he wrote his first rap song. When he reached 9th grade, he began passing out mixtapes of his music in the high school parking lot. Roll would sit in his car, and sell his mixtapes. In 2003, he released his first project, The Plain Shmear Tap. Then, he released a four-part series of Gamblin’ on the White Boy from 2004 to 2011.
In 2010, he collaborated with Memphis rapper Lil Wyte on the song, Pop Another Pill. Following that, he released many mixtapes and solo albums. In 2013, he devised a mixtape titled Whiskey, Weed & Women. The mixtape was earlier named Whiskey, Weed, & Waffle House. After the restaurant threatened to take legal action against him for using their name, he changed the name.
